Day 39 - Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse
Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu - Hefe-Weisse
Munich, Germany (GERMANY)
ABV 5.0% Calories 160*
So far on my list of close to 40-beers, only a few have been hefeweizens. I think they are refreshing. This Franziskaner met my expectations and went down very smooth. It also went well with the fish tacos I had for dinner. But like the Paulner, it was a little bland and had no over-riding flavors. I still prefer the Hoegaarden over these two German brews.

Try it again :) That's all I'll say.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Aengus...try, try again. Look for hints of banana on the finish. I also found it best from the bottle...believe it or not.
ReplyDeleteIv'e tried hundreds and hundreds over the last 25 years of robust swilling, and Franziskaner is my favorote!
I have to agree with the above two - but try it on tap and preferrably with a fresh keg. You may prefer Hoegaarden for a single beer (I don't, but it's good), but the thing about Franziskaner is the last beer tastes as good (or better) than the first, while with Hoegaarden after 3 or 4, you will have a sickly sweet taste in your mouth that ruins any further drinking...Franziskaner doesn't have the sweetness that the belgian whites have and prevent you from enjoying them for a full evening. BTW, if you like Hoegaarden, you'll love Allagash White or Wittekirke.
ReplyDeleteThe bottled beer is the best. You get it the way the brewery intended it to be - without the yeast settling to the bottom of the keg or carried through old, and possibly uncleaned, lines & taps.
ReplyDeleteImportant! Are you pouring the beer correctly? Pour all but the last 15mm into the glass then swirl the last bit to get all the yeast into the remaining mix. Then pour the remaining beer on top and around the head to get the yeast to filter through the beer to give it flavour.
Better yet... go to Munich!
I have friends who hate wheat beer who love this one. It is a miracle brew in my opinion! These same friends still do not like hoegarden, I think maybe they disordered...
