I wonder if your poor luck with Samuel Smith's beers could be something to do with the store you purchased them from. I used to buy refrigerated Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout at Gerrard's in Redlands all the time and was never disappointed. However I recently purchased one stored on a shelf at a large chain store in Palmdale and as you describe, it was (disappointingly) sour. I suspect that the chain store did not practice the proper storage methods the small privately owned outlet did.
